Kadiba Stadium is set for a Shs5.1 billion facelift aimed at upgrading its playing surface, floodlights and drainage system as Uganda prepares to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) officially handed over the stadium to the National Council of Sports (NCS) on Tuesday to pave the way for the redevelopment works which will be done by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.

The upgrades are intended to bring the facility closer to Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards and ensure it is ready to serve as a training venue during AFCON 2027, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.

The redevelopment will focus on three major areas.

The playing surface will be upgraded to meet international standards, while the floodlighting system will be improved to allow for night training sessions and matches. The stadium’s drainage system will also be revamped to prevent waterlogging and keep the pitch playable during heavy rains.

Kadiba was recently used as a training venue during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), but FUFA and NCS say further improvements are necessary to meet the requirements for the continental tournament.

The stadium is among the facilities earmarked to serve as official training bases for teams during AFCON 2027. Other venues include Namboole Stadium, St Mary’s Stadium Kitende and Lugogo.

The handover ceremony was attended by State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, NCS Chairman Ambrose Tashobya, FUFA President Moses Magogo and officials from the Ministries of Works and Transport, and Defence and Veteran Affairs.

Officials said the project represents another important step in Uganda’s preparations to host AFCON 2027 and strengthen the country’s football infrastructure.
