Equity Bank Uganda has strengthened its reputation as a leading player in diaspora banking and cross-border remittances after winning three major awards at the AIDO Network Pan-African Impact Awards.
The awards were presented on Saturday, May 23, during Africa Liberation Week celebrations held at Speke Resort Munyonyo. Equity Bank Uganda was recognised for excellence in Cross-Border Remittances, Diaspora Banking Solutions, and Diaspora Investments.
The recognition highlights the bank’s growing influence in providing financial services tailored to Ugandans and Africans living abroad. The awards were organised by the AIDO Network, a Pan-African organisation that promotes historical justice, repatriation and the socioeconomic reintegration of Africans in the diaspora, including Afro-Caribbean communities reconnecting with their African heritage.

According to Paul Jones Eganal, President of the AIDO Network and Chairman of the Global African Diaspora Kingdoms, Equity Bank emerged as the standout institution after a global voting exercise that attracted more than 70,000 diaspora participants.
“Over the last few months, a massive amount of work has gone into this, culminating in over 70,000 members of the global African diaspora casting their votes online. Equity Bank consistently stood out at the absolute front as the favourite diaspora bank for global Africa,” Eganal said.
Winfred Wairi, Senior Manager for International Banking and Cross-Border Payments at Equity Bank Uganda, said the awards affirm the bank’s continued investment in financial solutions designed for Ugandans and Africans living overseas.
She explained that the bank has moved beyond traditional remittance services and is now focusing on helping diaspora customers build wealth and invest back home.
“The bank has increasingly shifted its diaspora banking model beyond simple remittances for consumption, instead positioning it as a gateway to long-term wealth creation,” Wairi said.

Through products such as fixed deposit accounts and high-yield savings plans, diaspora customers are able to grow their savings while investing in opportunities in Uganda.
One of the bank’s flagship offerings, the Equity Release product, allows customers abroad to access up to 70 per cent of the appraised value of their Ugandan properties as liquid capital. The funds can then be used for real estate projects, land acquisition or business expansion.
Equity Bank Uganda has also expanded investment opportunities for diaspora clients by giving them access to government securities such as treasury bills and treasury bonds, providing safer and long-term investment options.
