Film festival in celebration of legendary Swedish film maker Ingmar Bergman launched

Yesterday evening, film lovers and cultural enthusiasts were treated to a cinema screening of the life of legendary Swedish film maker Ingmar Bergman at Alliance Francaise marking the launch of the  Bergman100 Film Festival.

The Bergman100 Film Festival is an on-going global showcase to celebrate the life and legacy of legendary Swedish film maker, Ingmar Bergman, who would have turned 100 years this year.

Speaking at the pres briefing before the cinema screening, Polly Kamukama the curator of the the festival stated that the audience will engage with Bergman’s work in a local context.

“There will be a discourse on gender representation in film featuring a wide-ranging panel of experts as they discuss challenges, oppourtunities and solutions to the plight of female artistes in  Uganda”, he stated.

The five-day festival slated to take place from October 15-19, will also feature free movie screening of Bergman’s iconic films; The Seventh Seal, Persona, Autumn Sonata and Fanny and Alexander at Century Cinemax.

“Each of the four films has been carefully selected from a different decade in Bergman’s career between the 50s and 80s to highlight his growth as an artist as well as his unmatched consistency at telling powerful human stories in a unique style”, Polly explained.

What you need to know about Bergman

Bergman is widely regarded as one of the foremost filmmakers in cinematic history and directed more than 40 feature-length films. Among those known around the world are “The Seventh Seal”, “The Silence”, “Wild Strawberries”, “Persona”, and especially his last film, “Fanny and Alexander”.

He began his career as a playwright and prose author.
