If there is one thing everyone ought to do in their life, is to attend the famous Nyege Nyege festival at least once before fuel hits 10k.

Just like a typical Matooke Republic citizen, Nyege Nyege has seen it all. From sudden bans and alarming international travel advisories to protests from self-appointed moralists, the festival has absorbed every blow and proved that nothing can stop the reggae.

Against all odds, seasoned diehards make the next edition a top New Year’s resolution, while curious first-timers, fueled by sheer FOMO and a thirst for adventure, scramble to check this four-day escape off their bucket list.

To their shock, Nyege Nyege is not the average weekend party; it is an endurance sport where standard clocks stop making sense as early as 7:00 PM, and the fine line between having the time of your life and descending into an existential crisis comes down to pure preparation.

The contrast reveals itself long before any of these festival goers set foot on the festival grounds.

After convincing a couple of friends to tag along and securing their full festival access, the first timer embarks on the Nyege escapade full throttle. Armed with brand new suitcases packed with sandals, micro mini-skirts, sling bags and shades, they check into an airconditioned hotel in Jinja on day one.

Meanwhile, the battle-tested veteran rolls in with a carry-on bag, a single pair of trainers, extra socks stacked in a side pocket, enough cash for a pre-game drink each day, hangover tabs and a waist bag to soldier through the festival.

They already know the weather along the Nile does not negotiate with style. They also know leaving Kampala at 3:00 PM on a Friday will cost them at least five bottles of Uganda Waragi Lemon & Ginger stuck in the Mabira gridlock. Instead, they carpool on Thursday night, grab some roadside roasted meat and pre-game at a local kafunda in Njeru or Jinja, and enter Friday well-rested and ready for the groove.

Once on-site, the newcomers’ illusions unravel quickly.

Accustomed to the colorful photobooths and VIP treatment at the typical Kampala party, the newbie is faced with completely the opposite. In no particular order, a camping village welcomes them and a multi-stage ecosystem tucked away in thick riverside greenery.

Iron sheets take center stage at the makeshift Dark Stage, while at the heart of the grounds, the main stage emerges in all its glory for a touch of Ugandaness. Here, recognizable sounds take dominance while Hakuna Kulala on the other hand the decks never power down. Live and active throughout the entire festival with diverse sounds from all over the world.

All this without a VIP section or even tables and that’s not all. There is a stage for every mood and vibe.

A few hours into the groove, the friend group start to break apart and by 10, everyone is on their own.

The veteran on the hand has just arrived at the venue, has located his friends, secured a lemon and ginger and is ready to party. They know which stage to migrate to when the tempo dips, who is performing when, how to carry their bags and certainly have a power bank to power through the night and most importantly, how to go back.

They know better than to underestimate the festival grounds and can’t be bothered by the dust or the mud because what is nyege nyege without rain? Their special nyege trainers have carried them through the past 2 years and are the best contenders for the task.

That same tactical mindset dictates survival on the dance floor and at the food stalls.

The veteran plays the long game, treating daytime as a window to recharge, wander through hidden gems around the festival grounds, take a swim or boat ride and keeps the drinks simple in preparation for the next day.

By Sunday afternoon, the newbie likely to leaves utterly spent and nursing swollen feet, while the veteran departs with red earth beneath their nyege sneakers, a camera roll filled with surreal memories from the festival, new friends, and their alarm already set the very second tickets drop.
