Kampala has spent the past two days in a cheerful buzz. The city streets have been alive with scenes of kindness, surprise, and something blue.
Kampala’s morning commute came with a surprise twist, a bright blue one.
Across popular city spots such as the school zebra crossings, Clock Tower, Nakasero market, Centenary Park and at major traffic junctions, unusual figures caught everyone’s attention.
Cheerful bear mascots could be seen helping children cross the road, guiding drivers through tight parking spots and sharing smiles with anyone willing to stop and engage.
The mystery mascots, dressed head to toe in blue with a bold sign reading “Something Big, Something Blue is Coming,” quickly became the talk of the day.
Shoppers stopped to take photos. Boda boda riders slowed down to ask what was happening. Office workers paused on their way to work to grab a flower or a smile.
By midday, social media was buzzing with pictures and videos of the bear mascots performing small acts of kindness, guiding parents through busy crossings, surprising school children with hugs, and brightening up a few otherwise ordinary moments.
In the evening, the same blue mascots reappeared at zebra crossings helping children and community members cross safely while spreading the same curious message: “Something Big, Something Blue is Coming.”
But the wave of kindness didn’t end on the streets. The blue bears also visited hospitals, both private and government, and turned ordinary moments into heartfelt gestures.
At IHK, Kampala Hospital, Kira Health Center, and Kawaala Health Center IV, the bears delivered care kits to new mothers in postnatal wards, along with fruit hampers for hospital staff. Nurses, cleaners, and askaris received a token of appreciation that turned an ordinary workday into something special.
Many were left smiling, wondering who could be behind such random acts of kindness and why everything seemed to point to something big and blue.
Nobody seems to know exactly who’s behind it or what’s next, but one thing is clear, Kampala hasn’t seen this kind of feel-good mystery in a while.
Could it be the start of a new campaign? A brand launch? Or just a group out to remind us that kindness still counts?
