Chinese company, Huawei Technologies has delivered the first batch of CCTV cameras ordered by the government to fight crime and gun violence in Uganda.

According to sources in government, the over 5,000 cameras are to be installed in urban centres across the country.

The cameras are part of President Museveni response to the high profile assassinations such as Arua Municipality MP, the late Ibrahim Abiriga, former AIGP, Felix Kaweesi, and state prosecutor Joan Kagezi.

When addressing Parliament on June 20, Museveni said that 24-hour surveillance would help the police in conducting robust investigations and aid in the forensics and arrests.

“They can escape now but they will not escape the cameras,” he said.

Museveni also banned the use of hooded jackets, introduced police drones and electronic, trackable number plates.
