The issue of whether or not to institute another lockdown in the fight against COVID-19 has been a subject of discussion in government and the public at large.
The news we are receiving now indicates that government is set to announce a lockdown specifically on Kampala Central Business District (CBD). This is after several people in Kampala neglecting the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that were issued by the Ministry of Health in a bid to control further spread of disease.
The Minister for Kampala Betty Amongi reveals that the cabinet has resolved to institute a COVID-19 lockdown after the city is increasingly becoming a hub for COVID-19 infections. The past weeks have seen Kampala record over 300 COVID-19 cases and about 15 deaths.
However, the lockdown will not deter government from continuing with the phased easing of lockdown in other areas.
On Monday, the national taskforce is said to have agreed on reopening places of worship with a maximum of 70 people in attendance that will have to strictly follow the Standard Operating Procedures.
The taskforce also agreed on the reopening of Entebbe airport, boarders and universities for final year medical students come October.
The Task-force proposed that penalties which include community work and fines should be imposed to those who defy the guidelines.
