Last week’s NRM party primaries were marred with election violence as over nine people were reported dead while over 100 survived with serious injuries. However, the most notable incident happened in Ntungamo were State Minister for Labour and Industrial Development Mwesigwa Rukutana turned violate following his defeat to Naome Kabasharira in the NRM primaries.  He grabbed a gun from one of his bodyguards and shot two people who were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Rukutana was arrested together with his three escorts allegedly on orders of President Yoweri Museveni. Yesterday news first came out indicating how the minister had been granted a police bond but later it was confirmed that he was yet to gain his freedom from custody.

Museveni has this morning confirmed that the former deputy Attorney General will be prosecuted for the crimes he committed.

“The cheating in the NRM Primaries is over. Those who beat People, like in Bukono, are all in jail or on the run. Minister Rukutana is in jail and will be prosecuted. They will be fully accountable with robust charges: assault, attempted murder, murder etc,” Museveni said.

He said more people are going to be arrested and charged.

“Those who altered results will go to jail on forgery, fraud, subversion etc. and their forgeries will not stand. We do not even have to repeat the elections, except where they were not held. We simply need to audit what happened in each village,” he said.
