Ministry of Public Service Permanent Secretary Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwiire has said that art teachers will start earning Shs4 million like science teachers by the end of five years.

Bitarakwate made the revelation while appearing before the Parliaments Human Rights committee this afternoon.

According to Bitarakwate, they simply started with science teachers but the plan is to have all teachers earn the same.

Last month, teachers, under the umbrella body of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), held a three-week demonstration across the country demanding teachers’ salary enhancement.

However, they called off their industrial action after holding a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni told teachers that he does not believe in using short-term strategies to solve issues.

“The art teachers insist that we should use the available resources to improve salaries across the board. Whilst this is possible, it does not solve the salary issue. It is okumemerera (sprinkling), where everyone will get a little, and then next year everyone strikes, “he said.

While appearing before the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee this afternoon, Minister of Public Service, Muruuli Mukasa, said that although Shs800bn is needed for teachers’ salary enhancement, they only have Shs200bn.
