In a coordinated effort, police and Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) security have uncovered a massive counterfeit currency scheme operating out of Entebbe Municipality. The investigation culminated in a raid at a local garage, where authorities discovered counterfeit US dollars worth an astonishing $2 million concealed in 40 large and medium-sized metallic boxes.

The breakthrough came after months of meticulous surveillance. In May and October 2024, the Special Investigations Unit (SH-ACU) received tips about a suspicious consignment at Entebbe International Airport. Following the lead, investigators tracked the smuggled consignment after it left the airport on December 17, tracing its movement to the targeted garage.

In a bid to deceive potential victims, the fraudsters had filled the metallic boxes with soil to mimic the weight of genuine currency. Further inspection revealed additional bulky, well-packaged boxes disguised as goods in transit. However, these boxes were found to contain nothing more than empty soda and beer crates.
