National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has expressed his willingness to stand for President in 2026.

While appearing in an interview on NBS TV last evening, the former presidential candidate, who contested in 2021 and finished second, said, “I offered myself a long time ago. I am willing to stand again.”

Bobi Wine said that their mission as NUP is not merely about securing positions in government but about effecting real change in Uganda’s leadership.

He rejected the traditional label of “opposition.” Instead, he positioned the National Unity Platform as a viable alternative to the current regime. “We (NUP) are not opposition; we are an option. We are not here for positions; we aim to take over the government.”

However, he explained that his standing in 2026 does not entirely depend on him, as he will have to undergo all the party’s processes before a collective decision is made.

“If my party (NUP) agrees with me, I’m available to stand for President in 2026,” he said.

Bobi Wine also spoke about the challenges faced by political activists, particularly betrayal within the opposition ranks.

“Not everyone in the opposition truly belongs to the opposition. We have seen many of our colleagues turn against us.”

He further pointed out that the struggle extends beyond politicians, acknowledging that not everyone in the security forces supports violence, nor do all Ugandans share the same views.

As part of his strategy to inspire activism, he encouraged Ugandans to leverage technology in their fight against oppression. “Your phones are more powerful than guns. Use them to open mindsets and put pressure on this regime.”

Bobi Wine also addressed allegations that NUP flagbearer cards were being sold. He dismissed the claims and reassured supporters of the party’s integrity.

“NUP cards are not for sale. Whoever has information about that, you should reach out to me or the secretary general. All our members are equal. Our processes are transparent,” he said.
