The International Crimes Division of the High Court in Wandegeya has released National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Central Uganda and former Butambala County MP Muwanga Kivumbi on bail as he awaits trial on terrorism charges.

The court ordered Kivumbi to pay a cash bail of Shs10 million. His co-accused were each granted a cash bail of Shs1 million.

Kivumbi and the other suspects were arrested between 2 and 14 January 2026 following a security operation at his home in Butambala District. The operation sparked controversy after more than seven people were shot dead.

The group is facing terrorism-related charges arising from the events surrounding the operation.

The accused applied for bail on 4 May, arguing that they had met all the legal conditions required for release pending trial.

After considering the application, the court ruled in their favour, allowing them to regain their freedom under the set bail conditions as they await the hearing of their case.
