The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled Jinja South East MP Paul Mwiru as its candidate for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Mwiru was announced by party Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule.
Mwiru pledged to be a pro-people Speaker who will restore Parliament’s image and reform its procedures. He also promised to serve Ugandans with honour and patriotism.
He will face off against the National Resistance Movement’s Jacob Oboth-Oboth, the Democratic Party’s Norbert Mao, and other contenders in the race.
On the Deputy Speaker position, Rubongoya said NUP is still consulting with other opposition parties. For the NRM, the party is set to front incumbent Thomas Tayebwa.
The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament is slated for May 25. A total of 528 legislators were sworn in, and over 350 belong to the ruling NRM party.
