Outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is expected to walk away with a generous retirement package that comes with several financial and lifestyle benefits attached to the office she has held.
Under Uganda’s retirement arrangements for former Speakers, Among will qualify for a monthly pension equivalent to 60 per cent of the sitting Speaker’s salary. In addition to the pension, she is also entitled to a lump-sum retirement payment calculated based on the number of years she has served in office.
Among is also expected to retain access to luxury transport after leaving office. The package includes brand new vehicle valued at Shs300 million. The vehicle is replaced every five years as part of the benefits granted to retired Speakers.
Her retirement privileges also extend to personal welfare and household support. The government provides two security guards, domestic workers and medical care for both the retired Speaker and their spouse. She’s also entitled to a utilities allowance worth Shs600,000 every month.
Housing is another major part of the package. Among is expected to receive a Shs300 million housing allowance to support her accommodation after leaving the Speaker’s office.
The retirement arrangement also includes periodic support for home furnishings. Every five years, a retired Speaker receives additional funds to purchase new furniture and maintain a comfortable standard of living.
