Parliament has assigned former Speaker Anita Among to a committee chaired by outspoken opposition legislator Francis Zaake.
Among, who represents Bukedea District, was appointed as an ordinary member of the Parliamentary Government Assurances Committee, while Zaake was named chairperson of the same committee during committee appointments announced on Tuesday.
The committee is one of Parliament’s key oversight bodies responsible for monitoring whether government fulfils promises and commitments made to the public.
Reacting to the appointment, Zaake said the development showed how political fortunes can change over time.
“Life comes full circle. The person who once made my work difficult when she was Speaker is now serving on a committee that I chair,” Zaake said.
Despite their past political differences, the National Unity Platform legislator said he was ready to work with Among and all committee members.
“I welcome her to the committee. I hope she will attend the meetings and contribute to the work. The Government Assurances Committee is not about fighting; it is about helping Ugandans receive what government has promised them,” he added.
The appointments are part of Parliament’s efforts to constitute committees and begin business for the new legislative session.
Among served as Speaker of Parliament before the latest committee reshuffle, a position during which she frequently clashed with some opposition MPs, including Zaake.
