National Unity Platform (NUP) has reappointed Nakawa West Member of Parliament (MP) Joel Ssenyonyi as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
Ssenyonyi will lead the opposition in Parliament for another two and a half years.
NUP has also appointed Manjiya County MP John Baptist Nambeshe as Parliament Commissioner.
Jinja South East MP Paul Mwiru, who contested for the position of Speaker of Parliament and lost, has been appointed Opposition Chief Whip.
The role of Leader of Opposition is recognized under Uganda’s parliamentary system and funded by the government through the Administration of Parliament Act.
While in office, the leader receives official transport, security, staff, and office space. These benefits apply only during the term of office.
Ministerial privileges work the same way. They come from a constitutional appointment to Cabinet and end when a minister leaves office.
In the 11th Parliament, Ssenyonyi gained a reputation as one of the strongest critics of government spending, corruption, and misuse of public funds.
