Security officers from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces have pulled out of former Speaker Anita Among’s homes, and police units have now taken charge of guarding them.
According to New Vision, spot checks at her residences in Ntinda, Nakasero, Kigo, and Bukedea show that the Presidential Guard Police and Counter-Terrorism officers have replaced the UPDF officers.
The change comes just days after Among held her first direct talks with President Yoweri Museveni since investigations into her started. New Vision reports that Museveni called her on Saturday, 30 May, and the two met the next day. What they discussed has not been made public.
The withdrawal follows a major security operation that started on 16 May. In the early hours, armed UPDF soldiers raided Among’s homes, disarmed her guards, and allowed a joint team led by the Police Criminal Investigations Directorate to search the properties.
The raids were linked to ongoing probes into allegations of corruption and abuse of office against the former Speaker.
During the searches, investigators combed through her houses in Nakasero and Ntinda in Kampala, and the Kigo home in Wakiso that is still under construction.
At Kigo they found a Rolls Royce Cullinan worth over sh3.4 billion and several Range Rovers, which were later taken to Police headquarters in Naguru.
Searches also extended to Bukedea District, covering properties linked to some of her relatives. Since the operation, several senior Parliament officials have recorded statements with investigators.
Those include Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige, Director of Communications Chris Obore, and Director of Finance Patrick Kunobwa.
