Motorists can once again use the Namungoona–Bwaise section of the Kampala Northern Bypass after the Ministry of Works and Transport reopened the road following months of repair works.

The ministry announced that the repaired section has been reopened to traffic, marking the end of a major phase of the rehabilitation project that had disrupted the movement of motorists for several months.

Although the road is now open, the contractor, Stirling Civil Engineering Limited, will continue with road marking works. The ministry said these final works are expected to be carried out with little or no disruption to traffic flow.

The Kampala Northern Bypass is one of Uganda’s busiest roads, serving as a key route that helps divert traffic away from the congested Kampala city centre. The 21-kilometre bypass connects several major highways, including the Kampala–Masaka Road at Busega, Kampala–Mityana Road, Kampala–Gayaza Road, Kampala–Bombo Road, Kampala–Gulu Highway and Kampala–Jinja Highway, making it an important transport corridor within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

Construction of the bypass began in 2004 before it was officially opened to traffic in 2009. As traffic volumes continued to rise due to Kampala’s rapid urban growth, the road was later upgraded into a four-lane dual carriageway with modern interchanges to ease congestion, improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.
