Police in Katwe have arrested five security guards in connection with the theft of a firearm loaded with five rounds of ammunition from a Chinese road construction camp in Bunamwaya, Makindye-Ssabagabo.
The incident was reported on 18 August 2026 after Chandiga Charles, a security guard employed by Capital Guard and deployed at the construction camp, returned to the site at about 7:00 a.m. without his firearm.
Chandiga told his Operations Officer that he had fallen asleep while on duty and, after waking up, realised that his firearm was missing. The matter was immediately reported to Kikumbi Police Station, which sought the assistance of the Police K9 Unit to trace the weapon.
A sniffer dog named Sophia was taken to the spot where Chandiga had reportedly been sleeping. After picking up a scent, the dog tracked it for about 20 metres before stopping near one of the tractors and sitting down, signalling that the scent was present there.
The tractor was locked, but Chinese workers at the construction site opened it, leading to the discovery of the missing firearm and its five rounds of ammunition.
Police then placed the sniffer dog inside the tractor, where it picked up the scent again and tracked it for about 100 metres towards the area where the camp’s security guards lived.
The dog passed several rooms occupied by the guards before going directly into Chandiga’s room.
Police subsequently arrested Chandiga and other night guards employed by the same security company. They were taken into custody for questioning as investigations continue to establish how the firearm was stolen and why it was found in Chandiga’s room.
