Uganda Cranes playmaker Allan Okello is set to leave Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga) for Moroccan club AS FAR Rabat in a deal that could earn his former club nearly five times what it paid for him.
The 26-year-old midfielder is moving to the Moroccan top flight after just seven months at Yanga, where he enjoyed a remarkable spell.
The reported transfer package is worth $1.5 million (about Shs5.6 billion).
The deal represents a major financial gain for Yanga, who reportedly signed Okello from Vipers in January for about $300,000 (approximately Shs1.1 billion).
If the reported figures are confirmed, Yanga will have turned an investment of about Shs1.1 billion into a package worth Shs5.6 billion in just seven months — a potential increase of about Shs4.5 billion.
Yanga president Hersi Said confirmed on Saturday that the club had agreed to sell Okello as he seeks a new challenge in Morocco.
“Today, officially, we are going to sell our player Allan Okello. He has been part of this family, and today we are opening the door for him to go and look for greener pastures. But remember, Yanga is home, he will return here when we need him,” Hersi said.
Okello’s rapid rise in value comes after an impressive debut season with Yanga.
Despite joining the club midway through the campaign, the left-footed midfielder finished as Yanga’s leading scorer with 14 league goals, helping the club retain its Tanzanian Premier League title.
His performances appear to have significantly increased his value on the transfer market.
Okello’s reported AS FAR package of about Shs5.6 billion is also substantially higher than his current Transfermarkt valuation of $578,300, equivalent to roughly Shs2.2 billion at the same exchange rate.
For Yanga, the deal represents a remarkable return on investment.
The club reportedly paid Vipers about Shs1.1 billion for Okello in January. Seven months later, a sale worth about Shs5.6 billion would give the Tanzanian champions a potential gross gain of around Shs4.5 billion, before any associated fees or deductions.
Okello’s move to AS FAR marks another major step in a career that has taken him across Uganda, Algeria and Tanzania.
He made his name at KCCA FC before moving to Algerian side Paradou AC in 2020.
He later returned to Uganda and joined Vipers, where he developed into one of the country’s leading attacking midfielders and played a key role in the club’s domestic success.
His performances at Vipers earned him a move to Yanga, where he quickly established himself as one of the club’s most important attacking players.
Now, after just half a season in Tanzania, Okello is heading to Morocco with AS FAR — and with his transfer value having increased dramatically in a short period.
For Yanga, the move could prove to be one of the club’s most profitable player sales in recent years, while Okello gets the opportunity to test himself in another competitive African league.
