The Bishop of Rwenzori Diocese, Reuben Kisembo, has urged the newly installed Omukama of Tooro, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, to remain faithful to his wife, Queen Rebecca Amoding, and honour the vows they made in their Christian marriage.
Speaking during a service at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal on Tuesday, Bishop Kisembo said the Church of Uganda does not support polygamy and reminded the new King of his commitment to his marriage.
“I know Omukama follows Christianity, and the Christian marriage vows specify one wife, one woman,” Bishop Kisembo said.
He added that he believed the King would honour the vows he made to Queen Rebecca.
For starters, the children born to King Nyabongo I and Queen Rebecca cannot automatically inherit the throne.
According to the Babiito royal clan, an heir to the Tooro throne must be born to a mother belonging to a recognised clan of the Tooro Kingdom. Queen Rebecca Amoding is Atesot.
Beyond the King’s family, Bishop Kisembo urged him to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of Kingdom resources.
“This has been a long-standing issue. I urge you to put a distinction between personal and institutional properties,” he said.
The Bishop also asked the new King to prioritise youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation and public health.
He specifically called for greater efforts to address HIV, alcohol abuse and drug abuse in the Kingdom.
Bishop Kisembo further urged the people of Tooro to support their new King as he begins his reign.
