The Uganda Cranes has marked the opening of a new chapter in their home history with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Libya in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the newly constructed Hoima City Stadium.
The match, which kicked off at 7pm on 29 September, was the first international fixture to be played at the new stadium, giving the Cranes a memorable start at their new temporary home. For years, Uganda has hosted its major international matches at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Thousands of passionate fans turned up in Hoima in large numbers, filling the stadium and creating a lively atmosphere as Uganda played its first competitive international match at the facility. The supporters cheered the team throughout the game.
The Cranes went into the match looking to build on their opening 1-1 draw against Tunisia and were rewarded with three points after debutant Arnold Vula scored the decisive goal.
Uganda held on to the narrow lead to secure a crucial victory in front of the home crowd and move to four points from their opening two Group H matches. The result puts Uganda at the top of Group H.
Uganda already secured their place at the 2027 AFCON as co-hosts alongside Kenya and Tanzania. They are using the qualifiers to give new players international experience, assess different combinations and build a stronger squad ahead of the tournament.
