Newsflash. The real reason you kiss with your eyes closed has nothing to do with romance.

Why then? Closing your eyes when kissing isn’t a sign you are a hopeless romantic; it’s actually just something your brain does so you can enjoy it more. Clever brain.

It’s long been thought of as a sign of love and romance – or something we do because we can’t focus on things that close to our eyes. Or, because it’s just a bit weird not to. But the real reason we shut our eyes when kissing has nothing to do with our feelings for someone else, or how good our short-distance eyesight is.

Scientists at Royal Holloway, University of London have discovered that we close our eyes when kissing because our brains aren’t able to process visual data at the same time as processing the physical sensations from our mouths.

Polly Dalton, one of the scientists, said that focusing strongly on an image will reduce our awareness of stimuli in other senses, and that this could explain why we close our eyes when kissing, so we can concentrate on the physical sensations.

“Shutting out the visual input leaves more mental resources to focus on other aspects of our experience”, she said.

So you ask… Er, why haven’t I been closing my eyes during sex?
