Lt. Col. Peter Seku Kidemuka, the Project Engineer overseeing the renovation works at Namboole Stadium, has confirmed that the UPDF Engineering Brigade will soon start the installation of 212 floodlights, promising optimal visibility on the pitch.

While speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Kidemuka said that the floodlights will be ready before Uganda’s crucial World Cup qualifiers in June. He explained that the floodlights they purchased are capable of generating approximately 2000 lux of light, marking them among the best globally.

“It will be like day; you will not see a single shade,” said Kidemuka. Currently, the team on the ground is installing a new modern LED scoreboard.

Earlier this month, the stadium hosted two test UPL matches. Kidemuka said that this helped them identify the gaps that need to be addressed. The crucial ones include the state of the access roads, traffic, ticketing problems, and fan safety to and from the stadium, among others.

The upgraded lighting will debut during Uganda’s doubleheader in the World Cup qualifiers, with both matches (Botswana and Algeria) scheduled for a 7 PM kick-off.
