On February 26, the 2025 Trace Awards & Summit set the stage for an unforgettable night of African music, culture, and creativity at the stunning Mora Resort in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

As the platinum sponsor, Johnnie Walker was at the center of the celebrations, playing a pivotal role by curating a premium brand experience, that seamlessly blended the bold spirit of whisky with the electrifying energy of African music’s biggest night.

The event brought together an array of music icons, industry powerhouses, and cultural tastemakers, with South Africa’s Tito & Huppe claiming Song of the Year for Tswhala Bam, a global dancefloor anthem. Nigerian superstar Rema solidified his dominance by winning Album of the Year for Heis, and Male Artist of the Year, while Ivory Coast’s Didi B bagged Best Hip-Hop Artist.

The star-studded night also saw Makhadzi crowned Best Dancer, DJ Moh Green named Best DJ, and Diamond Platnumz recognised as Best Global African Artist. South Africa’s Tyla secured Best Female Artist, while Congolese icon Fally Ipupa took home Best Live Performance. The Changemaker Award honoured Rwandan choreographer- Sherrie Silver, while Nigerian legend D’Banj received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

But beyond the accolades, the night was a celebration of Africa’s ever-expanding creative economy, an ecosystem that Johnnie Walker is proud to champion. Through its partnership with Trace, Johnnie Walker underscored its commitment to fueling cultural expression and artistic innovation, creating a bespoke brand experience that was at the heart of the celebration.

 The Johnnie Walker lounges became the ultimate gathering spot for A-list celebrities and industry leaders, offering premium whisky tastings and immersive brand showcases that celebrated the synergy between music and bold progress.

Christine Kyokunda, Johnnie Walker Uganda Brand Manager, reflected on the significance of this partnership:

“Music and whisky share a common DNA, both celebrate boldness, creativity, and the pursuit of greatness. Our presence at the Trace Awards wasn’t just about sponsorship; it was about championing the artists who keep walking and pushing boundaries. We are thrilled to have been part of this iconic moment for African music.”

She also applauded and congratulated Joshua Baraka for representing Uganda;

“I would have loved to see Joshua win, but his nomination alone speaks volumes about his talent and growing influence. We are incredibly proud of him, and this is just the beginning, the sky is the limit.”

Baraka was nominated in the Best East African Category, which he lost to Kenya’s Bien-Aimé Baraza.

The 2025 Trace Awards not only celebrated Africa’s finest musical talent, but also reinforced the continent’s influence on the global stage. With artists pushing boundaries, and brands like Johnnie Walker committed to walking alongside them, the stakes are set to get even higher.
