Uganda’s legendary Afrigo Band delivered a nostalgic performance filled with timeless hits and soulful rhythms at Uganda’s premier night club, Guvnor during this month’s edition of the Friday Night Live held on June 27th, leaving revelers dancing and singing along.

This month’s edition, which marked the debut of I&M Bank Uganda as the new sponsor, drew a vibrant and diverse crowd, with revelers from different age groups turning up to celebrate a night of timeless music.

The night kicked off with lively DJ mixes from the resident DJ, setting the mood with a blend of Ugandan hits, including urban classics and a few recent favourites, that got revelers in the groove early on.

At exactly 11pm, the iconic sound of instruments filled the air, signaling the start of the night’s main action and setting the stage for a memorable performance.

The band wasted no time and jumped right into it. Their first one-hour session featured some of their signature classics, including ‘Abaana b’Afrigo,’ ‘Jim Wange,’ ‘Batuuse,’ among others. The session also included renditions of familiar old-school favourites, a theme that carried through some moments of the night.

At exactly midnight, the band turned up the ante, with Hon. Rachael Magoola taking the lead on vocals. ‘Emaali,’ a beloved anthem at traditional parties across the country, dropped and instantly got all the revelers on their feet. Moments later, when ‘Obangaina’ hit the airwaves, the party had reached its peak.

More classics and renditions kept coming throughout the night, including crowd favourites and Zouk oldies that added a smooth, danceable groove to the already electric atmosphere.

Later in the night, Sophie Nantongo brought an extra layer of excitement to the event with her smooth voice and catchy songs, lighting up the stage with favourites like ‘Nkwagala Nnyo’ and ‘Love Super.’ Her performance got the crowd singing along and added a fresh, soulful vibe to the night.

Tshaka Mayanja, the Marketing Lead at Guvnor, expressed his delight at how Friday Night Live continues to grow into a key platform for celebrating Ugandan music and connecting generations through shared experiences.

“This is more than music. This is culture, memories, and a celebration of who we are as Ugandans. We’re excited to have I&M Bank on board, as they always support experiences that bring people together and create lasting moments,” Mayanja said.

The Friday Night Live, held every last Friday of the month at Guvnor will return on July 25th with an exciting lineup expected to keep the energy and good vibes going.
