Police have provided more details about the circumstances surrounding the death of legendary singer, saxophonist and Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu went to his girlfriend’s residence at around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Kawala said Matovu and the woman were allegedly leaving the residence when they were confronted by a man who had previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
Police arrested the woman who was with Matovu, and preliminary information suggests that the incident may have followed a physical altercation.
However, Kawala said detectives are still working to establish exactly what happened during the confrontation and the events that led to Matovu’s death.
Matovu sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider. He later died while receiving treatment.
The woman remains in police custody and is assisting detectives with the investigation.
The male suspect has been identified but is believed to have fled the scene. Police are searching for him so that he can be arrested and questioned about the incident.
Kawala said investigators are continuing to verify the different accounts of what happened before and after the confrontation.
Police have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue and said further information will be released as more details are established.
Matovu, who was 77, was a founding member and long-serving leader of Afrigo Band, which he helped build into one of Uganda’s longest-running musical groups.
