Speke Resort Munyonyo, Uganda’s premier lakeside conference destination, is hosting the 5th National Safe Motherhood Conference, which began on October 22, 2025. The three-day event has drawn hundreds of health experts, policymakers, and development partners to advance Uganda’s maternal and newborn health agenda.

Her Royal Highness Sylvia Nagginda, the Nnaabagereka of Buganda, officiated as Chief Guest, delivering an impassioned call to prioritise maternal and child health as a cornerstone of national development.

“No woman should lose her life while giving birth. Safe motherhood is not a privilege—it is a right,” she said, urging greater investment in antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and postpartum support to reduce preventable deaths.

Also in attendance was Charlotte Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Ambassador for Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) Prevention, who underscored the importance of community sensitisation and wider access to lifesaving interventions.

She commended the Ministry of Health’s efforts to scale up PPH prevention programmes, citing a 44% increase in immediate postpartum family planning uptake between FY2023/24 and FY2024/25.

According to the Ministry, PPH remains the leading cause of maternal mortality in Uganda, accounting for 25%–40% of maternal deaths, with the national maternal mortality ratio estimated between 189 and 336 deaths per 100,000 live births.

The conference featured expert panel discussions on strengthening health systems, advancing obstetric innovations, and empowering midwives to drive community-level interventions. It also provided a platform for collaboration among government leaders, medical professionals, civil society, and development partners.

Speke Resort and Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo, Uganda’s largest and most luxurious resort, offers a blend of elegance, comfort, and scenic beauty. Its accommodation options range from opulent Presidential Suites and Cottages to Executive and Superior Rooms, all overlooking Lake Victoria and lush tropical gardens.

Renowned for hosting major international summits and events, the resort boasts East and Central Africa’s largest conference facilities, making it a premier venue for diplomatic, corporate, and government gatherings. Guests enjoy a world-class experience with five fine-dining restaurants, two bars, 19 fully equipped conference halls, and five outdoor event spaces ideal for weddings, business retreats, and grand celebrations.
