A fresh push to boost Uganda’s blood supply is underway as Victoria University Kampala teams up with the Uganda Blood Transfusion Service for a major donation drive today.
The one-day campaign will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the university campus, welcoming students, staff, and members of the public willing to donate and help save lives.
University Vice Chancellor Lawrence Muganga is rallying eligible donors to take part, stressing that the need for blood remains urgent across the country.
“Saving lives isn’t left to doctors alone—it’s something we can all contribute to,” he said, urging people to step forward. “A single donation can make a real difference.”
Organisers say the drive is built around the message “Saving a Life, A Shared Responsibility, A Drop for Hope,” highlighting the role communities play in supporting patients who depend on blood transfusions—especially during emergencies, surgeries, and long-term treatment.
Health facilities across Uganda continue to face pressure to maintain adequate blood stocks, relying heavily on voluntary donors to meet demand. Events like this are seen as critical in closing that gap.
The initiative is open throughout the day, allowing donors to participate at their convenience while also learning more about the importance of regular blood donation through on-site awareness sessions.
This effort adds to the university’s growing track record in community outreach. Recently, it worked with the Ruparelia Foundation during the Rajiv Ruparelia Eye Camp in Bukedea, where thousands received free eye care services.
Medical experts emphasize that one unit of blood can support multiple patients, making every donation count. With that in mind, organisers are hopeful the drive will draw strong participation and inspire a lasting culture of giving, especially among young people.
