The Guinness backed Butiki League returned for its sixth season over the weekend at Yes Sports Centre in Nsambya, Kampala, with football lovers treated to a unique blend of local action and top tier English Premier League entertainment.
Kira College Butiki Old Boys turned up in large numbers for the season opener, many clad in jerseys of their alumni clubs, as well as their favourite Premier League teams.
Fans did not have to leave the grounds to catch the much-anticipated clash between Arsenal and Newcastle, thanks to the Guinness Matchday on Tour experience.
The Guinness Matchday truck had rolled into the venue for the first time, giving fans the ultimate football on wheels experience as they watched the match live on a giant screen.
Arsenal fans were left breathing a huge sigh of relief after Eberechi Eze’s ninth minute strike proved enough to hand the Gunners a crucial 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates.
The result ended Manchester City’s three day stay at the top of the table and pushed Arsenal three points clear of their rivals, although Mikel Arteta’s side has played a game more.
The Gunners could stretch their lead further when they host Fulham at the Emirates next weekend, while Pep Guardiola’s City are next in action away to Everton on Monday, May 4.
Speaking at the event, Guinness Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, Denise Nazzinda, said it was exciting to see the Butiki League kick off with the Guinness Matchday on Tour experience.
“As the official beer of the Premier League, Guinness is deliberate about bringing football closer to fans, whether they are in a bar or at a sports ground, we will be there,” Nazzinda said.
She added that Guinness is preparing an even bigger experience for football lovers at the end of the season.
“On Sunday, May 24, we will host the 2025/26 Premier League season finale at UMA Show Grounds in Lugogo. The event will bring together the very best of what we have delivered throughout the season. We have a lot planned, including exciting entertainment and a wide range of engaging activities for everyone to enjoy,” she added.
Meanwhile, at Kampala Rugby Club, the Guinness backed Mwiri League also delivered another memorable experience during Matchday Four, serving fans a cocktail of football and cricket action.
In one of the most contested football matches of the day, Suici FC survived a scare from Ruga Ruga FC to secure a vital comeback victory, a result that confirmed their place in the knockout stages.
