Nathan Asiimwe George, who plies his trade for Charlton Athletic FC in England, is among the 26-man squad that Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has called up for the upcoming international friendlies against Comoros and Ghana.

The matches will be used to prepare the Uganda Cranes ahead of a busy international schedule this year, with AFCON 2025 qualifiers coming up and the FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign resuming.

Born to Ugandan parents in England, Asiimwe, who can play across all four positions in defence, was eligible to represent both Uganda and England, but this call-up means he chose to play for Uganda.

Aged 19, Asiimwe has been through the Charlton Athletic ranks since 2019 when he was 12 years old. The defender enjoyed a successful 2022/23 campaign at the academy level, winning the Professional Development League 2 – South title with the U18s and the 2023 London Senior Cup with the U21s.

It was because of such consistently good performances that he was awarded his first professional contract at the club in July 2023. The contract, which has an option of an additional year, will keep him at the club until 2026.

On his first-team debut, which was against Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Trophy in November 2022, Asiimwe provided an assist to his fellow academy graduate Karoy Anderson.

Since then, he has managed to make 18 appearances at the club, which plays in the England Football League One. Currently, they are 14th on the table of 24 teams with 44 points in 38 games.
