Former Uganda Cranes captain Andy Mwesigwa is seeking public support to save his AMESCO High School in Bugwanya Village, Wakiso District, from possible takeover by a bank over an outstanding loan that has reportedly accumulated to Shs1.3 billion.
Mwesigwa has organised a fundraising football match scheduled for today, 13 October, at Hamz Stadium, starting at 3pm, to raise money towards saving the school.
The match will feature Andy Mwesigwa XI against David Lutalo and Geoffrey Lutaaya XI. Entrance fees are Shs10,000 for ordinary tickets and Shs100,000 for VIP tickets.
Organisers will also sell merchandise, including jerseys, as part of the fundraising drive.
Speaking to the media, Mwesigwa said AMESCO High School was more than a retirement investment, explaining that the institution also provides education to vulnerable children from different parts of the country.
He said he had invested his earnings from his football career in establishing the school, which he considers his main source of security after retiring from professional football.
The school is now facing the threat of losing the investment as ABC Capital Bank moves to recover the outstanding loan. Mwesigwa has appealed for government intervention and urged well-wishers to support efforts to save the institution.
He called on members of the public to attend the fundraising match and contribute towards keeping the school operational.
