Former Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has retired from international football after 13 years of representing the national team, bringing an end to a career in which he helped Uganda return to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and later captained the side.
Aucho announced his retirement on Monday, 12 October 2026, reflecting on a journey that began with his international debut on 30 November 2013 and saw him earn 77 caps for Uganda.
He described wearing the national colours of black, yellow and red as the greatest privilege of his life, saying his childhood dream was to represent Uganda on the biggest stages of international football.
“Growing up as a young boy working at Bugembe market abattoir, my dream was simple: to hear our national anthem echo on the biggest stages of world football,” Aucho said.
The midfielder highlighted Uganda’s return to the AFCON finals after a 38-year absence as one of the defining moments of his international career. He also represented the Cranes at three AFCON tournaments and had the opportunity to lead the team as captain.
Aucho credited his achievements to faith, hard work and the support he received from Ugandans throughout his career.
Although he will no longer represent the country on the pitch, the midfielder said he remains committed to Ugandan football and urged the next generation of players to take responsibility for the national team.
“It is now time for a new generation of heroes to step forward, carry the flag, and write their own history. I look forward to supporting them as one of Uganda’s biggest fans,” he said.
Born in Jinja, Aucho began his football journey in Uganda, playing for Jinja Municipal Council FC between 2009 and 2010 before moving to Water FC, where he played from 2010 to 2012. He later featured for Simba FC in Uganda before building a career across several African leagues.
His club career also included spells with Kenyan sides Tusker and Gor Mahia, South African club Baroka FC and Tanzanian giants Young Africans, among other teams.
Aucho attended Namagabi Primary School in Kayunga, St Thudus for his O-Level education and Iganga Mixed School for A-Level.
