Government is set to halt the repatriation exercise of Ugandans from overseas starting August 25, 2020. According to Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Judith Nabakooba the move is intended to minimize congestion in the COVID-19 quarantine centres.
After two phases of the repatriation exercise, Nabakooba said so far a total of 2,970 Ugandans have been returned home from different parts of the world.
Yesterday on Sunday, 286 Ugandan Nationals and legal residents who have been stranded in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan following the closure of Entebbe International Airport to passenger flights due to the COVID-19 pandemic safely returned home and were taken to mandatory quarantine.
Nakooba also warned the public against the growing public laxity in complying with the guidelines in place to prevent the spread of COVID19. She said the country is entering a critical stage in its fight against COVID -19.
“Government is concerned about the rising number of COVID-19 deaths. Currently, the total number of the dead is 13 and all these are within a space of less than one month,” Nabakooba said.
To date Uganda has 1,500 cumulative total confirmed cases after 66 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed yesterday. The cumulative total recoveries stand at 1,142.
