TRAVEL: This is how your new Equator in Kasese might look like

The winning design of Equator Monument by Eric Prince Ondia

After the poorly re-built Equator that angered Ugandans in Queen Elizabeth National Park was demolished by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, a new design of how the new tourism magnet might look like has emerged. 

The design that was a product of the Joadah Innovative Challenge sponsored by Jaffer Joel Aita was won by Eric Prince Ondia. 

“The design draws inspiration from the green and mountainous character of Uganda’s landscape,” Ondia said.

As such, the design is made part of the landscape retaining the green character. According to the convener, idea was to have a monument that offers more than just a visual image.

“Underneath the monument, the design seeks to expose visitors to lively and attractive resources such as a cultural display, coffee shop and craft shops,” he said. 

Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where the imaginary line that divides the earth into two half passes. The Equator or the Uganda equator crosses into Uganda at a point situated 75km south of Kampala along the Kampala – Masaka road.

Other equator markers are located in Kasese district within the Queen Elizabeth National Park, 420km southwest of Kampala.
