High Court in Kampala has sentenced former guard to Maj. Juma Seiko, Alex Cherotich to 60 years in prison for shooting dead two bodaboda riders and injuring their passengers.

Justice Flavia Anglin Ssenoga said the former UPDF soldier recklessly used his gun and ended up injuring and taking the lives of innocent people. Ssenoga added that Cherotich’s conduct was indecent and has to serve a severe punishment.

“Although you are a first time offender, court needs to send a strong message to the public that guns should not be misused to kill innocent people who just like you, also have families to look after,” Ssenoga said.

She therefore sentenced Cherotich firstly to 35 years on charges of murder and 25 years on attempted murder charges. The judge however said the two sentences will run concurrently.

On confirmation of his sentence, Cherotich pleaded to court to reduce on the sentence so that he can get a chance in future to at least meet his family again.

Cherotich committed the crimes on December 3, 2016 while at his work station as the guard at the home of Maj. Juma Seiko located at Nakasero Hill, in Kampala. Cherotich shot dead two bodaboda riders Lamex Ogwang and Fred Sembatya and injured David Ssenkubuge and Solomon Mugabi.
