The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has purchased 60 body cameras to be worn by their law enforcement officers while in the field.

Last week, the KCCA Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka, met with their law enforcement officers following the emergence of accusations from traders and hawkers. The officers are accused of making brutal arrests and extorting money from hawkers in exchange for their confiscated merchandise.

David Luyimbazi, the KCCA Deputy Executive Director, said that body cameras are going to help them hold their officers accountable whenever they are conducting an operation.

Luyimbazi explained that their initial plan was to purchase 255 body cameras, but they channeled some of the money to set up the surveillance system.

“We have purchased 60 cameras at Shs470m (Shs7.8m for each camera),” he said.

He also explained that the equipment will enable the KCCA legal department to collect evidence during investigations or better defend their actions during a particular encounter.
