A boda boda rider has been shot dead by a police officer during the National Cleaning Day exercise in Ndejje, Kampala, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident happened at around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at Ndejje Kanaaba in Katwe Police Division, where security personnel had been deployed to maintain order during the community cleaning exercise.
The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Kizito Ronald Jjuuko, a boda boda rider.
According to preliminary findings by the Uganda Police Force, Jjuuko allegedly attempted to force his way through an area that had been secured by police officers.
During the confrontation, Police Constable Allan Okello, who is attached to Ndejje Police Station, allegedly discharged his firearm, shooting Jjuuko.
The rider died as a result of the shooting.
Police have since arrested Okello as investigations get underway to establish exactly what led to the confrontation and whether the officer’s use of the firearm was justified.
“The officer has been arrested, and investigations are underway to establish the circumstances under which he discharged his firearm, resulting in the death of the rider,” police said in a statement.
Jjuuko was preliminarily identified using his National Identification Card.
Investigators are now working to establish what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting as police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
