Police have arrested a private security guard accused of turning against the very client he was assigned to protect—allegedly stealing millions of shillings and gold, then using part of the loot to start a business.
The suspect, Justin Akena, was picked up in Bweyale after a police search linked him to the theft at Goldex Uganda Limited in Kamwokya. Akena had been deployed at the premises as a guard under Magnum Security Company.
Investigators say the incident happened over the weekend when Akena allegedly broke into a client’s vehicle and took off with a bag containing Shs 29 million in cash and 900 grammes of gold. The gold is estimated to be worth about Shs 500 million.
Police tracked him to Gaspa village in Bweyale, where they found him running a small retail shop believed to have been set up using part of the stolen money. According to authorities, Akena admitted to the theft after his arrest.
Earlier reports had suggested that Shs 290 million had been stolen, but police later clarified that this was an error, confirming the actual cash amount was Shs 29 million.
Akena is now being held at Mawanda Road Police Station as detectives finalize investigations and prepare to charge him in court.
