The Electoral Commission has officially launched the nationwide Local Council (LC) voter registration exercise as preparations intensify for the upcoming local government elections across the country.

The ongoing process involves the compilation of the Village (LCI) Voters’ Register as well as the Village Women Council Register, aimed at updating records ahead of the electoral exercise.

According to the Electoral Commission, the registration exercise is being conducted from 6 July to 10 July 2026, running daily between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at designated village registration centres nationwide. Eligible citizens are encouraged to register in the villages where they normally reside, and must present either a National Identity Card or their National Identification Number (NIN).

After the registration phase, the updated voters’ registers will be displayed for public inspection on 13 and 14 July 2026, giving residents an opportunity to verify their details or request corrections where necessary.

The electoral roadmap further shows that nomination of candidates for LCI positions will take place from 15 to 19 July 2026 at sub-county headquarters, running daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Nomination forms will be issued by parish election officers between 9 and 14 July 2026.

Campaigns for LCI candidates are expected to run from 20 to 27 July 2026, after which polling will be held on 28 July 2026. Voting will be conducted through the traditional lining-up method at designated public venues in each village, with every village serving as its own polling station. Each candidate will also be allowed to appoint two polling agents to oversee the process.

In a related schedule for village-level leadership positions, nominations will take place from 15 to 19 July 2026, followed by campaigns from 20 to 22 July 2026, with polling set for 23 July 2026.

The Electoral Commission has urged all eligible voters to participate actively in the process to ensure accurate voter registers and a smooth electoral exercise at the grassroots level.
