The nomination of candidates for Village Council (LC I) Chairperson elections has officially begun across Uganda, with hundreds of aspiring leaders turning up on the first day of the exercise.

The Electoral Commission (EC) said eligible candidates are being nominated at their respective Sub-county, Town Council and Municipal Division headquarters. The exercise, which started on 15 July, will run until 19 July 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

EC Deputy Spokesperson Paul Bukenya said the opening day registered a strong turnout and encouraged more eligible Ugandans interested in contesting for the positions to present themselves for nomination before the exercise closes.

After nominations, candidates will campaign from 20 to 27 July 2026, ahead of polling scheduled for 28 July 2026.

Voting for LC I chairpersons will be conducted using the traditional lining-up method at designated public venues in each village. Every village will serve as its own polling station, and each candidate will be allowed to appoint two polling agents to monitor the voting process.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission is also conducting nominations for other village leadership positions. These nominations will run from 15 to 19 July 2026, followed by campaigns from 20 to 22 July 2026, while polling will take place on 23 July 2026.

The Commission has urged eligible citizens to take part in the electoral process, saying broad public participation is essential for credible grassroots elections and effective local leadership.
