Police has warned the public against a suspected fraudulent online investment platform operating in Uganda under the name ‘Hut 8’.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said that they have taken note of concerns raised by members of the public who claim they were persuaded through social media to invest money on the platform with promises of high returns. Some of those who deposited money are reportedly unable to access their accounts or withdraw their funds.
Police, however, said they have not yet received any formal complaints regarding the platform. They added that the legitimate Hut 8 Corporation has publicly distanced itself from the investment scheme.
According to Police, Hut 8 has stated on its X account that it has no authorised representatives or investment operations soliciting funds from the public in Uganda.
The Police Force said it is working with relevant regulatory and financial-sector agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the platform, identify those behind it and take appropriate legal action.
Police have urged anyone who may have lost money through the platform or has information about its operators to report to the nearest Police station.
Affected individuals have been advised to provide all available evidence, including payment records, mobile-money and bank transaction references, telephone numbers, social-media accounts, online links, screenshots, chat messages and details of people who recruited or promoted the platform.
Police have also warned members of the public against paying additional money to anyone claiming they can help them withdraw funds or unlock their accounts.
Victims have further been cautioned about individuals who may approach them claiming to recover their lost money in exchange for an upfront payment, as such offers could be another attempt to defraud them.
