Police in Katwe are investigating a shooting at Freedom City along Entebbe Road that left a police officer dead and two people injured on Sunday.
The officer, identified as Police Constable (PPC) Saul Ayijuka, allegedly shot 23-year-old Florence Akankunda and a private security guard before shooting himself.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said preliminary investigations suggest the incident may have been linked to a previous relationship between Ayijuka and Akankunda.
Akankunda was shot in the thigh and rushed to hospital for treatment, while the injured security guard was also taken to hospital.
“Police responded to the scene, which was secured and documented. An AK-47 rifle, ammunition and spent cartridges were recovered and exhibited as part of the ongoing investigation,” Owoyesigyire said.
Ayijuka’s body was taken to Mulago Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police said investigations are ongoing to establish what led to the shooting, including the events preceding the incident and the nature of the relationship between the officer and Akankunda.
