Police have arrested a 33-year-old driver following a fatal road crash along Mutungo-Biina Road in Kampala that killed a boda boda rider and seriously injured three pupils.
The crash occurred at about 7:30am on 18 September 2026 near Muggies Hotel in Nakawa Division.
The accident involved a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin, registration number UA 945EW, and a motorcycle, registration number UMA 530LD.
The motorcycle rider, identified as 22-year-old Reagan Muhindo, a resident of Kasokoso in Wakiso District, died at the scene.
The three pupils, aged seven, 13 and 13, were travelling to Kiswa Primary School in the Bugolobi area when the crash occurred. They sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Mulago Hospital for treatment.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the driver of the Toyota Hilux, identified as Dennis Mulema, a resident of Mutungo-Biina, was arrested on Jinja Road shortly after the crash.
According to Kawala, preliminary investigations indicate that Mulema was travelling from Biina towards Mutungo when the Hilux collided with the motorcycle carrying the pupils.
Police suspect careless driving to have caused the crash, although investigations are still underway to establish exactly what happened.
“The preliminary cause of the accident is suspected to be careless driving. However, investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and determine the exact cause,” Kawala said.
Mulema remains in police custody as investigations continue, after which he is expected to be taken to court.
Police have also appealed to motorists, boda boda riders and other road users to exercise caution, follow traffic rules and observe road safety guidelines to prevent crashes and save lives.
