People contributing food towards the coronation of Tooro King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I have been warned against donating certain items that are considered unsuitable for use at the royal palace.
The warning comes as Tooro Kingdom’s nine counties mobilise food and cash contributions ahead of the coronation scheduled for 29 September at Karuziika Palace.
Each county has been asked to contribute at least Shs1 million in cash, two cows and other food items to help feed guests attending the ceremony.
Moses Musinguzi, spokesperson for the coronation organising committee, said involving ordinary subjects was intended to make the event a collective responsibility for the people of Tooro.
However, Musinguzi said some foods would not be accepted at Karuziika Palace because of their cultural significance.
The prohibited items include pigs, hens, goats, sweet potatoes, cassava and beans.
Criscent Mugume, a palace ritualist, said the restrictions are based on rituals and traditions observed at the royal palace.
He said the prohibited foods carry particular cultural meanings that make them unsuitable for use at the palace, although he declined to explain the specific practices behind the restrictions.
The mobilisation of food and other contributions is part of a wider fundraising campaign by the coronation organising committee.
The committee is seeking Shs925 million to support preparations for the coronation of King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
