Uganda Cranes defender Bevis Mugabi joins England’s Carlisle United

Uganda Cranes defender Bevis Mugabi has officially signed for English club Carlisle United on a two-year contract, marking a new chapter in his professional football career.

The 30-year-old joins the National League side—currently playing in England’s fifth tier—after a stint in Cyprus with Anorthosis Famagusta, where he made 17 appearances and scored twice.

Carlisle United, managed by former Manchester United and Wales legend Mark Hughes, confirmed the signing in a statement on their website:

“Carlisle United Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Bevis Mugabi on a two-year deal.”

Mugabi, known for his versatility in defence, can operate both as a central defender and a right-back. He brings with him a wealth of experience from club and international football, having earned 26 caps and scored one goal for the Uganda Cranes.

He also featured for Uganda in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and played a pivotal role in their qualification for the upcoming 2025 AFCON tournament.

Born in England, Mugabi developed through the youth systems at Fulham and Southampton. He launched his senior career at Yeovil Town in 2016, where he made over 100 appearances and scored five goals.

In 2019, he moved to Scotland to join Motherwell FC in the Premiership, where he spent five successful years, racking up 125 appearances and seven goals.

His move to Carlisle United is seen as a major boost for the club’s defence as they aim to push for promotion back to the English Football League.
