President Yoweri Museveni has given Uganda Cranes a major morale boost ahead of their CHAN 2024 opener, pledging a staggering Shs1.2 billion for every match they win.

The announcement was delivered by FUFA President Moses Magogo to the national team camp, just hours before the Cranes take on Algeria tonight at 8:00 PM at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The stakes couldn’t be higher as Uganda begins its campaign in a highly competitive Group C that also features South Africa, Guinea, and Niger. The tournament, being co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, has already captured regional attention — and Uganda’s opening clash is tipped to be one of the highlights of the group stage.

For Uganda, the mission is clear: break the curse. In six previous CHAN appearances, the Cranes have failed to progress beyond the group stage. But with a new generation of players, home support at full volume, and high-level motivation from the top office, the team is eager to turn the tide.

The showdown against Algeria isn’t just about three points — it’s personal. The North African side handed Uganda a painful 2-0 defeat in CHAN 2011, and tonight offers a golden opportunity for redemption.

With millions of Ugandans watching and the weight of history on their shoulders, the Cranes are hoping tonight marks the beginning of a new chapter — one fuelled by belief, unity, and billion-shilling incentives.
