The stage is set. In just 90 minutes, the Uganda Cranes could etch their name into history as they lock horns with defending champions Senegal in a quarterfinal blockbuster of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. Kick-off is at 5:00pm today at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Uganda’s journey to the last eight has already inspired thousands. Topping Group C with seven points from four matches, the Cranes arrive in the quarterfinals high on belief and hungry for their first-ever semi-final berth at CHAN.

Head coach Morley Byekwaso struck a balance between confidence and caution ahead of the clash.

“We are up against a well-drilled side that has been here many times. Senegal are physical and disciplined, but every team has weaknesses. At this stage, small mistakes can end your dream. My boys are prepared—physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are ready,” he assured.

Byekwaso stressed that discipline and composure will be Uganda’s most important weapons, alongside the passionate home crowd.

“We must stay disciplined against a disciplined side. Our job is to force them into errors and seize our chances. Playing at home gives us an extra push, and we know what the fans expect. Their support will make the difference.”

The players, too, carry the same burning ambition. Forward Joel Serunjogi echoed the unity within the camp and sent a rallying cry to fans.

“Everyone in camp is happy and focused. We’ve learned never to give up. It is an honour to represent Uganda, and I’ll give everything on the pitch. Our fans have been incredible—please come in big numbers. We will not disappoint. We want to win.”

With neighbours Kenya and Tanzania eliminated yesterday by Madagascar and Morocco respectively, Uganda remains the sole host nation standing.

The Cranes now have the chance not only to advance but also to unite millions of Ugandans behind a moment that could define their footballing story.

History beckons at Namboole. Can Uganda rise to the occasion?
