Belgian tactician Paul Joseph Put has committed his future to the Uganda Cranes, signing a new contract that will keep him in charge until 2028, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed.

The announcement ends weeks of speculation linking the 69-year-old coach with a potential move to African giants Cameroon, who were reportedly interested in securing his services.

Put was first appointed Cranes head coach on 2 November 2023, succeeding Milutin “Micho” Sredojević on a two-year deal that recently expired.

Under his stewardship, Uganda has shown steady progress — mounting a strong 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, reaching the CHAN quarterfinals for the first time in history, and reigniting hopes of returning to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

With the new contract signed, Put’s immediate focus will be guiding Uganda through preparations for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Should the Cranes qualify, it will mark their eighth appearance at the continental showpiece and the first since 2019, when they featured in Egypt.
