Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has increased the prize money for the StarTimes Uganda Premier League to Shs600 million for the upcoming financial year, in what it says is a major boost for clubs competing in Uganda’s top-flight football league.

The announcement was made by FUFA President Moses Hassim Magogo during the 102nd FUFA Ordinary General Assembly.

The league’s total prize money has increased from Shs128 million to Shs600 million, while the champions’ prize has more than tripled from Shs60 million to Shs200 million.

The runners-up will receive Shs100 million, with the remaining prize money distributed among other teams based on their final positions in the league.

Magogo attributed the increase to improved funding from the government, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.

The increased prize money is part of a wider expansion of FUFA’s budget, which will see the federation’s total payout rise to Shs1.54 billion in the next financial year, up from Shs735 million in the previous year.

FUFA will also introduce medical insurance for clubs in the FUFA Big League, while increasing payments for referees and improving staff facilitation.

The increase in prize money is expected to give clubs greater financial incentives to compete for the league title and improve their competitiveness both locally and in regional competitions.

For the champions, the jump from Shs60 million to Shs200 million represents an increase of Shs140 million, or more than 230 per cent.
